Young Munition Researcher Network Meeting

The Young Munition Researcher Network (YMRN) is an international community of early-career researchers dedicated to addressing the challenges posed by underwater munitions in marine and aquatic environments. Established to foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional development, the network connects researchers across disciplines through mentoring, networking, research collaborations, and regular meetings. By supporting the next generation of experts, YMRN aims to advance research on the environmental, scientific, and societal impacts of underwater munitions while strengthening links within the wider marine research community.

The Young Munition Researcher Network (YMRN) is a community of early-career researchers who are working on, or interested in, munitions-related research in marine and aquatic environments. Bringing together members from different countries, disciplines, and career stages, the network aims to foster collaboration, facilitate knowledge exchange, and support professional development through mentoring, conference participation, research partnerships, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. Through these activities, the network seeks to create an inclusive international platform where young researchers can connect, collaborate, and support one another in addressing the scientific, environmental, and societal challenges associated with underwater munitions. As interest in the environmental impacts of sea-dumped and underwater munitions continues to grow, the network was established to ensure that early-career researchers have opportunities to connect across disciplines, share expertise, and contribute to this rapidly developing field of research. A key objective of the network is to strengthen collaboration among young researchers. Through regular interactions, members can identify potential collaborators, explore joint research projects, discuss funding opportunities, and build partnerships that extend beyond their immediate research groups. To support these goals, during the first general network meeting held on 25 May 2026, members agreed to leverage existing communication channels, including the Munitions in the Sea.eu LinkedIn page and Forum. These platforms will be used to share research updates, highlight publications, advertise conferences and workshops, discuss grant opportunities, and promote emerging areas of research.
The network also recognizes the importance of peer support in professional development. Monthly meetings are planned to provide members with opportunities, including presenting their work, receiving feedback on conference presentations and dissertation defences. Looking ahead, the YMRN seeks to expand its activities by increasing member engagement, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating stronger links with the wider marine research community. Through regular communication, networking opportunities, and knowledge exchange, the network aims to empower the next generation of researchers working on munitions at sea and contribute to the advancement of this important field of study. The network is also exploring opportunities to invite guest speakers from related initiatives, including representatives from the youth wing of the European Ocean Board, which was recently established by the European Commission to support the implementation of the European Ocean Pact.

Join the Next YMRN Meeting

The next Young Marine Researcher Network meeting will take place on 25 June 2026 and will provide an opportunity for members to connect with fellow researchers, discuss ongoing projects and share funding and conference opportunities. New members and researchers interested in munitions-related research are warmly encouraged to join.
