Decades after World War II, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and remnants of ammunition are still regularly discovered on land and at sea. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit (German: Kampfmittelräumdienst) of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein specializes in addressing these hazards promptly and effectively. The unit ensures safety through tasks such as air photo interpretation and ground probing at deep construction sites.
Key responsibilities of KRD-SH include:
- Identifying suspicious objects as explosive ammunition or "improvised explosive devices" (IEDs) and taking appropriate measures.
- Removing and disposing of UXO and IEDs on land and in coastal waters.
- Operating and managing the state ammunition disposal facility.
