The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission – also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) – is an intergovernmental organisation (IGO) and the governing body of the Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area. HELCOM works to protect the marine environment from all sources of pollution, to enhance biodiversity and to support sustainable use of marine resources of the Baltic Sea through intergovernmental cooperation. HELCOM translates scientific findings into policies, strategies or recommendations for policy and decision making.
