The Federal Police is not only an integral part of Germany’s security architecture but also a trusted pillar of policing in Europe and beyond. With a workforce of nearly 55,000 employees, the Federal Police ensures the safety of people across various domains, including railway facilities, airports, and German coastal waters.
Key responsibilities include:
- Maintaining security in Germany through criminal investigations and counter-terrorism, operating on land, at sea, and in the air.
- Participating in the Maritime Safety and Security Centre (MSSC) as part of a network of federal and coastal state forces operating at sea.
- Operating vessels, surveillance, and patrol boats in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and the eastern Mediterranean under the Frontex commitment.
- Protecting the EU’s external sea border, monitoring maritime traffic and critical infrastructure, combating maritime crime, and investigating environmental offenses.
Additionally, specially trained federal police officers carry out prevention work worldwide for German shipping companies to protect against piracy and hijacking.
