Munitions in the Sea: On the Global Stage This June!

June 2025 is a pivotal month for raising global awareness about the environmental and security risks of underwater munitions, as several EU-funded research projects, including MMinE-SwEEPER take the stage at major international events. These initiatives aim to share scientific insights, promote collaboration, and advance innovative solutions to safely manage and remove munitions from the sea. The events mark a key step toward long-term strategies for healthier oceans and safer coastal communities.

June 2025 marks a major milestone in the global conversation about a hidden but urgent issue—munitions in the sea. From unexploded bombs and shells to leaking chemical and conventional weapons, the remnants of past conflicts continue to pose serious environmental, economic, and security risks, especially in European waters.

This June, several major EU-funded research projects are stepping onto the international stage to raise awareness, share research findings, and accelerate collaboration. Their goal? To bring global attention to the long-overlooked challenge of underwater munitions and to drive forward innovative, science-based solutions.

Why does this matter?
As pressure grows on the ocean for food, energy, and transport, dealing with these underwater threats becomes increasingly urgent. Understanding and solving this issue is vital for ocean health, maritime safety, and sustainable development. It requires international acknowledgement and awareness, as well as networking to solve the issues.

Who’s involved?
A network of leading European institutions, environmental scientists, engineers, and policymakers are working together through EU-funded research projects, including MMinE-SwEEPER, to map munitions sites, develop clearance technologies, and assess long-term risks. These teams will be showcasing their progress and forging new partnerships at several high-profile events in June.

Where to find us this June:
🔹 2025 UN Ocean Conference side event | 11 June | Nice, France
🔹 Fehmarn Belt Days | 14–16 June | Lübeck, Germany
🔹 Kiel Munition Clearance Week | 18–20 June | Kiel, Germany
🔹 Kiel Week |Kiel Week | 21–29 June | Kiel, Germany
🔹 Fraunhofer ICT Annual Conference | 24–28 June | Karlsruhe, Germany

These events provide a unique opportunity for researchers, stakeholders, and the public to engage directly with the science and strategy behind this critical work. Participants will explore cutting-edge technologies, policy frameworks, and case studies from across Europe.

What’s next?
The journey doesn’t end in June. Research teams will continue refining detection methods, testing clearance tools, and engaging with policymakers to ensure long-term solutions. With momentum building, the goal is clear: make our seas safer and healthier for future generations.
